Victor Osimhen has made a welcome return from injury, giving Galatasaray and Super Eagles fans a major reason for optimism ahead of the Turkish club’s important Champions League meeting with Barcelona. The Nigerian striker came off the bench in Galatasaray’s 3–1 victory over Kasımpaşa on Friday, October 9, 2026, and helped set up a late goal after more than a month on the sidelines.
For a player whose explosive start to the season had made him one of Galatasaray’s most dangerous attacking weapons, the comeback could hardly have arrived at a better time. However, while his return is encouraging, the club will still need to manage his workload carefully as he builds up his match fitness.
Osimhen makes his long-awaited return
The 27-year-old had been absent since picking up a right adductor muscle injury during Galatasaray’s 3–2 win over İstanbul Başakşehir on September 4. The problem affected the muscle around his groin and forced him to leave the match early.
Galatasaray subsequently confirmed that Osimhen had suffered a strain in his right adductor muscle group and would undergo further medical assessment. The injury proved troublesome enough to keep him out of several club matches, as well as Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures.
His absence was a significant setback for both club and country. Osimhen is not simply a striker who waits inside the penalty area for chances; his movement, pressing, strength and willingness to attack defenders can change the way a team approaches a match.
There had been encouraging signs during his rehabilitation, but Galatasaray’s medical staff were careful not to guarantee an immediate return. Before the Kasımpaşa fixture, club doctor Yener İnce said the forward’s condition would be assessed through further tests before a final decision was made.
That caution was understandable. A player returning from a muscle injury needs to regain confidence and sharpness without placing excessive strain on the affected area.
Super-sub appearance makes an immediate impact
Osimhen did not start against Kasımpaşa. Instead, he entered the match in the 77th minute, giving Galatasaray an attacking option for the closing stages.
The contest had become more complicated for the hosts after Lucas Torreira was sent off. Kasımpaşa capitalised on their numerical advantage to equalise through Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, putting pressure on Galatasaray to find a way to secure the result.
Galatasaray eventually regained control of the contest, with Barış Alper Yılmaz scoring before Mario Lemina added another goal late in the game. Osimhen played a part in the closing stages, providing the assist for Lemina’s goal as the hosts completed a 3–1 victory.
That contribution will be particularly satisfying for Osimhen. After weeks away from competitive football, he was able to return to action and help his team rather than simply make up the numbers.
His cameo was brief, so it would be premature to conclude that he has already returned to his best level. Nevertheless, contributing to a goal in his first appearance back is an encouraging start.
Why Osimhen’s return matters to Galatasaray
Before the injury, Osimhen had been in impressive form in the Turkish Süper Lig. Reports recorded six goals and two assists in his first four league appearances of the 2026/27 campaign.
Those numbers underline what Galatasaray had been missing during his absence. Osimhen offers a direct attacking threat, stretches opposing defences with his runs and gives teammates a target when they play forward under pressure.
His physical presence can also create opportunities for other attackers. Defenders often have to pay close attention to his movement, which can open space for runners arriving from midfield or the wings.
Against Kasımpaşa, Galatasaray showed they could still find a way to win without having Osimhen in the starting line-up. But having him available again gives coach Okan Buruk more options, particularly when matches become difficult or the team needs a different attacking approach.
The most important issue now is to ensure that his recovery continues without another setback. One successful substitute appearance is a positive sign, but it does not automatically mean he is ready to play a full 90 minutes.
Barcelona clash gives Osimhen another big target
Galatasaray’s next major test is their Champions League meeting with Barcelona. Osimhen’s return gives the Turkish side a timely boost as they prepare for a high-profile European fixture.
Barcelona will present a different challenge from Kasımpaşa, and Galatasaray will need to decide how best to use their returning striker. Starting him could give the team a stronger attacking presence from the opening whistle, while introducing him later might allow the club to control his minutes as he regains full fitness.
That decision should depend on his recovery, training response and medical assessment rather than the excitement surrounding his comeback.
For Nigerian supporters, Osimhen’s return is equally encouraging. The Super Eagles have important international commitments ahead, and a fully fit striker is a major asset to the national team. His recent injury meant he missed Nigeria’s opening AFCON 2027 qualifying matches, making his return to competitive football an important development.
Nigeria will need to monitor his condition carefully, but the immediate priority is for him to build consistency at club level.
A promising comeback, but patience remains important
Osimhen’s return against Kasımpaşa delivered what Galatasaray needed: fresh attacking energy and a contribution to a late goal in a hard-fought win. It also ended a frustrating spell away from competitive action that disrupted his promising start to the season.
There is still work to do before he can be considered fully match-fit, and supporters should avoid expecting him to immediately reproduce his best performances. Muscle injuries can require careful management even after a player has returned to the pitch.
For now, however, the signs are positive. Osimhen is back in action, Galatasaray have secured an important victory, and the Nigerian forward has another opportunity to build momentum ahead of the Barcelona clash.
If he continues progressing without further problems, his return could prove valuable to both Galatasaray’s European ambitions and Nigeria’s hopes in upcoming international matches.
Do you think Victor Osimhen should start against Barcelona, or should Galatasaray continue managing his minutes after his injury?
